You have arrived at the Internet home of Jonathan Maness.  I am a multi-instrumentalist and producer in the Knoxville, TN area.

I love playing guitar.  I fell in love with the sound of the steel-string acoustic guitar at an early age, and I love it to the point of not being able to keep a day job.  There you go, I've said it.  The barebones facts about why I have a website, a performing schedule, and business relationships that fall way outside of the normal 9-5 work week.  For the purposes of this site, that's all you need to know about me.  I want to be an artisan.

Now my first attempts at guitar were in the vein of such bluegrass flatpickers as Doc Watson, Tony Rice, and Bryan Sutton, but I also love Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chet Atkins, Joe Pass, John Williams, Brad Paisley, etc.  I am trying to find a way to incorporate all the guitar sounds I can into a recognizable style of acoustic playing that creates an emotional response like the names above do in me.  I came up with the slogan, "Acoustic ... on the edge", as a way of describing this style I am reaching for.  Now, I've come to realize that it's because I am on the edge of falling flat on my face at any time during a performance.

But, the bottom line is ... I love every minute of it, and I hope that never changes.

Best Regards,
Jonathan Maness

  • Mountain Soul continues work on our brand new project.  In addition to Scott Vestal's fine banjo playing, look for the rhythmic impeccability of another Sam Bush Band member, Chris Brown, to be on the record as well.  The project's material includes Daniel and Shawn Kimbro's originals as well as a smattering of material from songwriters from all over the Southeast.  Mountain Soul performs newgrass music with a no holds barred experimental twist.  At a point on the musical spectrum somewhere between the Flecktones and the Eagles, we consider ourselves a study in the newest recipe in semi-acoustic music.  Join us at the Mellow Mushroom on Cumberland Avenue in downtown Knoxville every Thursday night and be a part of the experiment!
  • I've been working really hard on my record lately as well! The tracks sound really nice, and I hope to have them available soon!
